Immigrants population in Canada

Immigration to Canada has been a significant contributor to the country’s population growth and cultural diversity since the late 1800s. Since 1980, Canada has welcomed millions of immigrants from all over the world. The number of immigrants to Canada has fluctuated over the years, with some years having higher numbers of immigrants than others. However, the Canadian government has maintained a consistent overall target of admitting between 250,000 and 300,000 new permanent residents each year.

In the 1980s, Canada admitted an average of 180,000 immigrants per year. In the 1990s, the number of immigrants increased to an average of 220,000 per year. The 2000s saw an average of 240,000 immigrants per year, with a peak of over 280,000 in 2001. In the 2010s, the number of immigrants increased again to an average of 260,000 per year.

As of 2021, the Canadian government is continuing to welcome a high number of immigrants and has set an immigration level plan for 2021 to 2023, which aims to admit 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, 411,000 in 2022 and 421,000 in 2023.

It’s important to note that the number of immigrants alone does not reflect the success of their integration into the Canadian society. The government of Canada has implemented several policies and programs to help newcomers settle and integrate into Canadian society, such as language training, job search assistance and support for community-based organizations.
