What is LMIA and how it is defined?

LMIA is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that assesses the impact that the hiring of a foreign worker would have on the Canadian labour market, and it is a mandatory requirement for certain types of work permits, such as the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).

The number of LMIA issued each year can vary widely depending on a number of factors, including

  • the state of the economy,
  • the availability of Canadian workers,
  • and changes to immigration policies.

It’s important to note that there are other ways to immigrate to Canada as well, and not all immigration categories require an LMIA.
